The Steps Gallery Acquires
'He Lied' by Mary Bennett

A brilliant intellectual, conceptual artist with a extensive, strong profile of exhibits and exposure at Art Basel Miami, New York Armory and so on.

"I am a long time political activist who seems to be in a perpetual state of outrage..." is how Bennett describes herself in the book Insight Out: Reversing Vandalism (CCA, 2004).

Bennett's towering column of handkerchiefs, each silk-screened with the words "He Lied", emphasises the legacy of repeated hurts that women experience. "A woman can't look at it and not remember somebody who lied to her" said Bennett. The handkerchiefs are antiquated symbols of femininity, but He Lied refers to a continuing reality; it is as if the tears the handkerchiefs dried have transformed into the message of the work's title. "I started thinking about how all-inclusive that phrase is". Considering the piece from a political perspective, she posits that men, fed up with the lies of the Bush administration, are adding to the pile as well. "We've all been crying for something," she said.

The Steps Gallery Acquires Cultivated Momentum by rising star US artist Paul Hayes

Recently published as one of 'the top 5 artists to look out for' emerging from the San Francisco scene, The Steps Gallery announces its acquisition of the significant piece Cultivated Mometum by Hayes. The artist, who has been taken on under exclusivity by The Steps Gallery this side of the pond, will be recreating the piece in the new gallery space, due to open in Pimlico, London, this summer.

Last month, commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission, Hayes has a bright future with representation from The Steps Gallery and Johansson Projects, directed by acclaimed curator Kimberly Johansson in the USA. The Steps Gallery is overjoyed at its discovery of Hayes and welcomes him to the team and to the UK.
